Retro car restoration is a demanding and time – consuming process. It consists of standard restoration of car exterior and its original factory parameters in order to recreate classic look of the model. It breaths new life into an old car.

How is it working?

Classic car restoration starts with introductory evaluation of the technical state of the car. When in service, the car is being cleaned thoroughly inside and outside, and next step is to take stock of general car condition. Documentation is enriched by photos taken at each level of restoration. Next activity is dismantling and cataloging the parts.

Disassembling the vehicle is started by dismantling interior and all car systems, including driveline, the engine, suspension and electricity. Plating, padding, glass panes and doors are removed.

In technological process of restoration very important factor is preparation of the exterior for panel-beating and lacquering. The panel-beating repairs and replacement of used elements which are deformed and corroded, is the biggest challenge that influences final effect and the real value of restored car. It is necessary to strip the whole car down to the bare metal underneath. It allows to evaluate the range of necessary work and time needed to do the job.

After finishing panel-beating it comes to covering the whole exterior and undercarriage with reactive primer to protect the car during the process of restoration. Rust is a problem for all car enthusiasts.  Anti-corrosion protection is put when all the parts are dismantled and separated.

The bottom part of car body is covered by zinc epoxy primer.

We cover plates seams with polyurethane joint.

Then put hard epoxy lacquer on each element.

Within platework some reconstruction steps are taken or plating is replaced. After repairing particular elements they are re-installed and adjusted to the whole vehicle. Those parts are for example lamps, bumpers or grill.

Simultaneously to panel-beating and lacquering the team of mechanics is working over technical evaluation of suspension parts and driveline. Meanwhile parts of car equipment are restored. Electricians are working on electric installations on basis of original schemes and deal with all the electronic devices.

Used parts are successively changed into new ones or crafted in our workshop. In the meantime driving  and brake system, rear bridge and engine are being repaired. Procedure here is the same as before: brake system and rear bridge are completely dismantled and each single part is evaluated thoroughly thinking of safe exploitation. Componentry restoration is about precise cleaning in the process of sandblasting, replacement of used parts, sand painting and zinc plating. In painting process the Novol for Classic Car technology is used. It embraces:

  1. Coverage of the whole car body end parts with epoxy primer,
  2. After matting the base the Surface of the car is filled with filler, and when needed, in some places with proper spackling paste (for technological reasons layer as thin as possible, not more than 0,5 – 0,9 mm)
  3. The whole surface is polished again and completely smoothed.
  4. The layer of acrylic base is put on.
  5. After matting the base and before painting, car body is protected in places endangered with corrosion (especially seams welded and pressure welds) with help of silicon.
  6. The protection of car undercarriage is done with special pastes, in the color of the car if this is client’s wish. The pastes are weatherproof and shake proof, and they protect the undercarriage for a long time.

The last part starts when the undercarriage had been lacquered. We begin with installing wire harness and electronic componentry such as widescreen engine with the whole system, fuel pump and so on. New brake and fuel cables are fitted and then undercarriage is assembled as well as engine and gear box. Next step is adding rear bridge and steering system.

Final step of restoration is to assembly glass panes, upholstery and seals of undercarriage. Paddings are mounted. On finishing all the job, the vehicle is serviced and suspension geometry is set. When the overall checkup gives a positive result then it is time for driving tests. During trial drives the proper working of all the systems and componentry is checked and running in the engine is done. After finishing trial drives retro cars are rechecked and reserviced including oil servicing.
